FAQ

Questions, Answered.

Absolutely. Most of our clients haven't trained in years — or ever. We start with a mobility screen, meet you exactly where you are, and build progressively. There's no "pre-requisite level."

No. Your trainer brings everything — resistance bands, light dumbbells, stability tools, and a foam mat. We work in whatever clear space you have: a living room, a hallway, even a kitchen is enough.

We don't bill insurance directly, but training is often HSA/FSA eligible when your physician writes a Letter of Medical Necessity. We're happy to provide supporting documentation.

Our trainers are W-2 employees — not independent contractors. That means consistent training, accountability, insurance, background checks, and the same trainer every week. You're not rolling the dice each session.

Our Post-Rehab Movement program is designed for exactly this. With your permission, we coordinate with your PT, honor any contraindications, and continue your progression safely. Many clients come to us on their final PT visit.

Cancel or reschedule any session with 24 hours' notice at no charge. Monthly membership can be paused or cancelled with 30 days' notice. No long-term contracts.

Yes — partner sessions are available at $180/hour total (split between you). Ask us about family pricing when you book.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED.
Is the first assessment really free?+

Yes. Your first 60-minute in-home assessment is complimentary — no card, no obligation. We use the visit to understand your goals, screen your mobility & balance, and recommend a program. You're free to walk away if it's not the right fit.

What does my trainer bring?+

Everything — resistance bands, light dumbbells, balance tools, stability pads, and a foam mat. You don't need to own any equipment. Just clear a small space (a living room, hallway, or open kitchen is plenty) and we'll handle the rest.

I haven't exercised in years. Is this for me?+

Absolutely. Most of our clients haven't trained in years — or ever. We meet you exactly where you are with a mobility screen on day one. There's no "pre-requisite level" and no judgment.

What makes you different from a gig-app trainer?+

Our trainers are W-2 employees — not independent contractors. That means consistent training, accountability, full insurance, background checks, and the same trainer every week. You're not rolling the dice each session.

Do you take insurance?+

We don't bill insurance directly, but training is often HSA/FSA eligible when your physician writes a Letter of Medical Necessity. We're happy to provide supporting documentation for reimbursement.

I just finished physical therapy. What's next?+

Our Post-Rehab Movement program is built for exactly this. With your permission, we coordinate with your PT, honor any contraindications, and continue your progression safely. Many clients come to us on their final PT visit.

What's your cancellation policy?+

Cancel or reschedule with 24 hours' notice at no charge. Late cancellations (under 24 hours) are charged 50% of the session rate. Monthly memberships can be paused or cancelled with 30 days' notice. No long-term contracts.

What if I don't click with my trainer?+

No problem. We'll rematch you with a different trainer at no extra cost. Finding the right personality fit is part of why this works — and switching is easy.

Do you cover my town?+

If you're on the North Shore and we can get to you within 30 minutes of Beverly, we'll train you. We currently serve Beverly, Salem, Peabody, Marblehead, Swampscott, Danvers, Lynn, Lynnfield, Wenham, Hamilton, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Gloucester, Rockport, Ipswich, Topsfield, and Middleton — with more towns added as we grow.

Education

What Is Functional Mobility?

"Functional mobility" is a clinical term for something simple: your body's ability to move through the activities of daily life — safely, comfortably, and without asking permission from pain or stiffness.

It's not about bench-pressing your bodyweight or running a 5K. It's about getting off the floor after playing with your grandkids, stepping out of the tub without hesitation, and carrying groceries up a flight of stairs like you did ten years ago.

A Simple Definition

Functional Mobility =

Strength + Range of Motion + Balance + Control,
applied to real life.

If you can do the things you want to do — walk, bend, lift, twist, climb, rise — without pain, fear, or help, you have functional mobility. If you can't, we can rebuild it.

In Plain English

It's Movement That Serves Your Life.

"Fitness" is a broad category. Functional mobility is the slice of fitness that actually determines whether you can live independently, confidently, and without fear — especially after 55, when every year of neglect shows up in a real-world task.

What It Is

The ability to move your own body through the tasks and postures your daily life demands — standing up, squatting down, reaching overhead, turning your head, stepping over obstacles, carrying things.

It blends four ingredients: strength (can you produce force?), range of motion (can your joints reach the positions you need?), balance (can you stay upright while doing it?), and motor control (can your brain coordinate the movement?).

What It Is Not

It isn't bodybuilding. It isn't cardio-class fitness. It isn't sitting on a weight machine doing bicep curls. Those things can be part of a program, but they're not the goal.

Functional mobility is judged by what you can do when you walk out the door — not by what a scale or a mirror says.

The Four Pillars

The Ingredients of Functional Mobility.

Every program we build addresses all four. Skip one, and real-world movement breaks down somewhere.

Strength

The force your muscles can produce. Without it, you can't stand up from a chair, lift a grandchild, or catch yourself when you stumble.

Range of Motion

The distance your joints can travel. Without it, reaching overhead, bending to tie a shoe, or turning to check a blind spot stops being possible.

Balance

The ability to stay upright through movement — on stairs, uneven ground, or a single leg. It's the single biggest predictor of whether you'll fall.

Motor Control

Your brain's ability to coordinate all of the above under real-world conditions — in a hurry, on a busy sidewalk, or with something in your hands.

Real-Life Examples

This Is What It Looks Like.

The easiest way to see functional mobility is to look at what it allows — and what its absence costs.

With Functional Mobility

  • Rise from a low couch or chair without using your hands.
  • Get off the floor after gardening or playing with grandchildren.
  • Carry groceries up a flight of stairs without stopping.
  • Step into a tub, over a curb, or onto a ladder confidently.
  • Turn your head fully to check traffic behind you.
  • Catch yourself if you stumble — instead of going down.
  • Travel, hike, dance, and keep up with the life you want.

Without It

  • × "Scooting" forward on the couch to stand up.
  • × Avoiding the floor entirely — "I won't get back up."
  • × Taking the stairs one at a time, both feet on each step.
  • × Fear of the shower, the ladder, the icy driveway.
  • × Twisting the whole body to back out of a parking space.
  • × A trip on a rug turns into a fall — and an ER visit.
  • × Quietly giving up the things you used to love.
Why It Matters After 55

The Numbers Are Sobering. The Good News: They're Reversible.

Adults lose strength, mobility, and balance every year after 30 — faster after 50, faster still without training. Here's what's at stake, and what training can recover.

1 in 4
Adults 65+ falls each year

Falls are the #1 cause of injury-related death in older adults. Most are preventable with balance and strength training.

30%
Muscle loss by age 80

Sarcopenia — age-related muscle loss — is not inevitable. Resistance training preserves and rebuilds muscle at any age.

+40%
Balance improvement possible

Studies show adults 60+ can meaningfully improve balance and reaction time in 8–12 weeks of focused training.

How It's Different

Functional Mobility vs. Traditional Training.

Most gyms and trainers were built for younger athletes chasing performance goals. Functional mobility training is built for real adults chasing real life.

What's the Goal?
Traditional Gym Training
Functional Mobility Training
Goal
Aesthetics, PRs, performance numbers.
Daily-life ability, independence, fall prevention.
Movements
Isolated muscles on fixed machines.
Whole-body patterns: squat, hinge, push, pull, carry, rotate.
Environment
Crowded gym, unfamiliar equipment.
Your home, your floor, your stairs — where life happens.
Progress Measures
Weight lifted, miles run, body-fat %.
Sit-to-stand, gait speed, balance, mobility screens.
Who It's For
Healthy adults already moving well.
Adults 55+, post-rehab clients, anyone rebuilding capability.
How We Train It

Our Approach at North Shore.

Every program starts with a mobility screen and ends with measurable improvement in the movements you use every day.

1. Assess

A 60-minute in-home mobility and balance screen establishes your baseline, your goals, and any medical considerations.

2. Prescribe

Your trainer builds a program around your joints, your history, and your goals — not a generic template.

3. Train

Weekly one-on-one sessions at home. Same trainer every visit. Progressions that respect pain, protect joints, and build capacity.

4. Measure

Every 8 weeks we re-screen and track progress — sit-to-stand reps, balance time, gait speed, reach distance. Real numbers, real change.

Curious What Your Baseline Looks Like?

Your first in-home mobility assessment is free — no card required.
